Description

The second volume of Barton W. Stone’s historic journal, The Christian Messenger (1827-1828) is a must for those interested in Restoration Movement history, as well as the doctrinal discussions and disagreements that took place in the early years of the Stone-Campbell Movement.

In the second volume, many articles and letters appear, which dealt with the Unitarian doctrine (the Father is the only one who can be classed as “God”) vs the trinitarian belief (the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all different, but are each “God”). These exchanges (which sometimes included Stone, but other times were readers responding to other readers) are valuable for today’s Christians, because there are still groups (such as the “Jehovah’s Witnesses”) who preach a Unitarian doctrine.

In addition, there are letters and articles by such notable Restoration Movement leaders as David Purviance, Elijah Goodwin, T.M. Allen, and of course, Alexander Campbell.

This edition, while enlarged and reformatted for easy reading, still retains the pagination of the original, so that it can be used by historians and researchers with ease.
