Description
Living Oracles (Second Edition, 1828) — Bicentennial Edition
Compiled and Edited by Alexander Campbell
First published in 1826, The Living Oracles was not a fresh translation produced independently by Alexander Campbell, but a carefully compiled and edited New Testament text. Drawing primarily from the translation work of George Campbell, James MacKnight, and Philip Doddridge, Alexander Campbell revised, harmonized, and published the volume to present what he believed to be clearest and most accurate English rendering of the Greek New Testament.
The result became one of the most influential New Testament editions in early nineteenth-century America—especially within the Restoration Movement. Its language was direct and modern for its time, intentionally shedding archaic expressions and ecclesiastical terminology that Campbell believed obscured the meaning of Scripture.
This Bicentennial Edition presents Campbell’s second edition (1828) in a carefully updated and reformatted volume for today’s readers. The text itself remains unchanged, preserving the historical integrity of the work, while the layout has been thoughtfully improved for clarity, readability, and study.
Features include:
-
Clean, modern typesetting
- The 200+ notes originally found in appendices are now conveniently placed as footnotes
-
Improved formatting for sustained reading
- A commemorative presentation marking two centuries since publication
Notable for its rendering of key theological terms—most famously its consistent translation of baptizo as “immerse”—The Living Oracles played a formative role in shaping theological discussion during the early years of the Restoration Movement.
